As soon as I got pregnant, anxiety about labor set in.  I was excited to have my first baby but nervous about how everything would happen.  I really wanted a doula who would support me throughout the labor and prepare me for it since my husband and I didn't have time for classes and didn't know what to expect.

Allie was amazing!  Not only did she bring tons of handouts and showed us pain relief exercises we would be able to do during the labor (the birthing ball was my favorite), she made me feel comfortable and assured me that everything would be okay.  The day that I thought my water broke Allie was on the phone with me constantly calming me down.  She arrived early morning Friday and stayed with us the whole time until I gave birth on Saturday.  She gave the most amazing foot massages to help me with my contractions and rubbed my back constantly when I was in a ton of pain.  She told me into what positions to get to relieve my pain and worked through the contractions with me telling me to breathe and try to concentrate.  She was such a great support and supported me throughout all of my decisions!

I really don't know what I would have done without her. I am so thankful and highly recommend her. We are definetly calling her with our second child!

I’m writing this note about Allie not only to endorse her work but, also, to speak to parents (or about-to-be-parents) that are considering drawing on her accessible knowledge and invaluable support.

My 42-year-old wife planned to have a VBAC.  The induction and cesarean birth of our perfect son was a miserable experience for her.  I believe that she felt robbed of a maternal rite of passage and, more importantly, that her (in her mind) negligent trust in her medical team caused unnecessary duress to our boy.  This time would be different.

After much research and a whole lot of counseling, she decided on a birth plan that included a natural VBAC relying upon the assistance of midwives. The gender would be a surprise.  She was considering a doula but, quite frankly, she questioned whether the advantage gained, given the midwives’ attuned philosophy, justified the additional costs.  For me, the relatively modest cost of assembling a better team than that we had for our son’s birth was an obvious one worth bearing.

My wife settled upon Allie.  From our first meeting, the wisdom of her choice was clear. Allie possesses a quiet, calm, supportive demeanor that is—and this is so important—authentic.  It is deeply ingrained in her character.  She spent whatever time we required to understand our birth plan and help us to improve the strategy and tactics we would use during the birth.

When the day came, Allie gave me the support I needed to support my wife make a miracle.  She took over the delivery room, making certain every person attending to my wife read and understood the game plan.  She gave me tireless support, from psychological coaching to putting in the muscle when I was exhausted massaging, stretching, squeezing my wife.  I’ll never forget the midnight image through my exhausted eyes of Allie drenched, half in the shower, pressing against my wife’s hips to relieve her pain mid-contraction.

My wife did not have an easy birth and, but for out team, intervention was inevitable. Allie came to our home at around noon.  We left for the hospital at 4:00.  My wife was fully dilated at 10:00 PM and gave birth at 6:30.  Allie never so much as yawned.

When my wife was discouraged to the point of giving up, Allie encouraged her.  When I had to pass out for five minutes to get some strength back, Allie stepped right up.  In the final moments, Allie gave my wife the encouragement, support and courage she needed to live an experience that has given her the ultimate happiness (and that, otherwise, would have resulted in grave sadness).  And when our precious daughter arrived, it felt natural and wonderful that Allie was there to experience it with us.

What would it have been like without Allie?  Who knows?  I know this:  I alone lacked the empathy, knowledge and strength to give my wife what she needed in order to do the most courageous, miraculous and important thing I’ve ever seen anyone do.  I think we’re done.  But this I'm sure of too: If there is another, I want Allie there.

I went on a mission to find the best doula for me to ensure that my birth experience was how I envisioned it, and sure enough I found Allie. She was bright, bubbly, and informative and gave me the tools I needed to make my own decisions. Thanks to Allie I was able to have a natural, unmedicated water birth that I had hoped for. Her calming presence and constant reassurance helped me get through my labor.

Nate and I thank you greatly for the amazing job that you did to help us. Your kindness and your ability to calm my fears were irreplaceable. I attribute me not resorting to any medication to the fact that you were there with us giving us new ideas of how to handle the pain during labor. Becoming a mother was the most empowering experience I ever had and that was possible due to how supportive and encouraging you were. We felt so blessed that you could help us bring Reese into the world. We couldn’t imagine having our daughter born without you there. You were great!!!”

Too bad we can’t take you with us when we move!

I am a first time mother and my husband and I were very nervous about the birth.  We hired Allie and immediately felt better.  She does not push any agenda and is totally neutral.  She was the perfect calming presence for us at the hospital before and after the birth.  She took beautiful photos as well!  We just had our post-partum visit and again she made us feel great about how things were going with our son.  She helped us with all our questions and said I could email or text her anytime.

Thank you Allie!

I had the privilege of having Allie as my doula for the birth of my second child.  With my first, (I didn’t have a doula) I had to be induced after my water broke and wasn’t getting contractions. Needless to say, I eventually received an epidural.

I knew for my second delivery that I wanted to have a natural, med-free birth.  If it weren’t for Allie, I don’t think that would’ve been possible.  She was with me every step of the way.  She assisted me in laboring at home and at the hospital.  Thank God for her big blue ball, which I labored on for several hours.  Also, I think her foot massages are what got me through the intense couple of hours when I was stuck at 8 cm dilated.  There were definitely moments when I didn’t think I had the strength or stamina to continue, but her words of encouragement and her calm presence kept me going.

After my experience, I believe every woman should have a doula, and if you’re fortunate enough…you’ll have Allie!
